The main character that will appear on the front cover of my magazine will be the character whole played the main role in the play, that is 'Ash.' ILL Manors - TEDX lecure

He was kicked out of high school in year 10 so attended a school for these kind of a people afterwards.
The people there had no respect for authority like him as the felt ignored by society- only listened to rappers.
Words guided them although they were negative.
He's a fan of concious hip hop.
Child stabbing another child- against it but understands they're from broken families.
Album allowed him to act as father figure to these kids.
Ill manors- nobody wanted to take the chance with him as he wasn't famous and hadn't directed before. After his album became number one everyone wanted him but he'd already signed for a low budget deal.
All boys school welcomed him he found a lot of talent, one of them didn't make it but he became main star of top boy.
Chav-  underclass background, use to mean child.
Can't make fun out of race or sex in the same way or there'd be scrutiny.
Riots- teenagers didn't feel part of society, from a dysfunctional background.
Group of boys told him to get off their property when filming near the station, ended up being main stars in the film as they respected him for standing up to them.

What are Plan B's beliefs/politics? What are his values/ideologies? Explain your answers.

Plan B believes that there is a reason behind the vicious circle of youth's not obeying to authority is due to the fact that they feel ignored by society and that authority shows that they don't care. Since Plan B has been in that position before as he was was kicked out of school in year 10 and was put in a pupil referral unit called the Tunmarsh Centre in Plaistow were he shared the same opinion and beliefs with other kids which was that they didn't respect authority because they felt ignored and that they didn't fit in. He wants to contradict the dominant ideology of today that young people are known for being up to no good. Plan B also wants to give young people a chance to succeed in life and not to feel discouraged by how the media portrays them or how authority treats them.

What does Plan B say about the media? Explain how this can be linked to Cohen's media theory of moral panics?

A moral panic is an intense feeling expressed in a population about an issue that appears to threaten the social order. So it is a public anxiety or alarm in response to a problem regarded as threatening the moral standards of society. This links to what Plan B says about the media. He said that the media always convey young people as dangerous and rebellious and calls them names like chav (Council House and Violent). By doing this, the public beings to associate danger with young people due to moral panic the media shows. Cohen's theory suggests that moral panic can bring fear and therefore if people begin to fear young people, the police will be continuously scrutinizing them. Plan B wanted to get that point through and show how the media contributes to he vicious circle.

How does the trailer promote channel 4's brand image?

The trailer promotes channel 4's brand image in multiple ways but mainly through the use of the contenders. Channel 4 has been known for being too reliant on TV shows so broadcasting the games allows their channel to appeal to a different audiences. The trailer shows all the paralymic contenders working hard to do well this can be reflected in Channel 4's brand values as they want to be seen as a hard working institution  which highlights that they are a good institution. The use of non-diegetic sound in this trailer helps channel 4 to promote because it has a different affect on the audience. The voice over of motivational music playing in the background shows that all the participants involved in the paralympics are very determined and motivated to produce the best results they possibly can do. In addition the use of fast paced shot movement showed the audience that they have a lot of training to do before they enter the paralympics. As the directer of 4Creative said "We had to make some noise." connotes that they are trying to raise awareness for people with disabilities and encourage them rather then making them feel as if they are not one of us. This also promotes channel 4's image because by raising awareness they will have achieved a company goal for themselves which is to educate the public about serious matter going on in the world and disability would be one of them. The trailer itself shows how disabled people themselves are determined and competitive, which can be reflected in their brand values as they want to be seen an independent institution. Also they're displaying disabled people which shows they don't discriminate and puts their brand in a good light. An oppositional reading may occur as the people are competitive and their brand value may be seen as competitive and selfish. The association with youth culture also promotes Channel 4's brand image as majority of the athletes featured in the advert are young and youthful. This creates an appeal towards the youth which is effective as statistics show most viewers on Channel 4 are youth. Association with youth culture isn't just seen but also heard in this advert. The hip-hop music heard throughout this advert also creates appeal towards the youth thus reinforcing the image of Channel 4 as trendy.

Print- Magazine Analysis

Title of publication -
The Title of the magazine is highlighted in comparison to the background of the magazine; Doctor Who is a worldwide franchise that is universally recognised so by making the title stand out as much as possible it will help selling the magazine because people will recognise it more due to its success on national television.
Slogan -
This magazine is a special addition magazine dedicated to the 50th Anniversary of the Doctor Who Television Show as a result they dedicated the slogan towards the 50th Anniversary Special "Celebrating 50 years of adventures in time and space" it's effective because they sum up the importance of the 50th Anniversary special with only one sentence. This will appeal to Doctor Who fans because it’s a limited edition only for the 50th Anniversary.
Central image -
With the central image they made the current Doctor at that time (Matt Smith) as the main character in this magazine however the story of the episode is that three doctors from the timeline meet up and save the day from evil and in the magazine they used the two other doctors (David Tennent and John Hurt) to pose with Matt Smith to showcase that three different doctors are working together in order to defeat evil.
Cover lines -
The Cover Line in this magazine stands out because the background of the magazine is mixture of black and grey in comparison to the cover line which has a dark gold colour which makes the cover lines stand out, the central image will grab the audiences attentions and the cover lines will maintain the audience’s attention.
Competitions
The magazine offers a free Blu-Ray DVD's, CD's and books of doctor who for the lucky winner. This would appeal to Doctor Who fans because normally these DVD’s would cost a lot of money but with this magazine their giving it away to one lucky winner which many people will want to be.
Language
The language used in the cover contain a lot of buzz words like "Special, Adventure, Space and Time, Haunt" this is just in the cover alone the language is being used to create an image for the reader that the writer wants them to imagine so that they are interested in watching the 50th Anniversary of Doctor Who.

Ill Manors trailer analysis

What are the typical codes and conventions of film trailers - what information is usually provided?
The trailer includes important information such as; the release date, taglines, reviews, title, protagonists, the directors name and companies that have funded the production. The song played throughout is a rap, a voice over which tells a story and gives hints to the audience suggesting what it is about, the meaning acting as a summary of the film. Enigma codes and used to make the audience want to know more,

How are trailers distributed?
By the studio that produced the production, or are normally distributed online, we see trailers in cinema's and online websites such as Youtube, IMDB.

How does Ill Manors use trailer conventions?
Ill manors doesn't give away any important details in the trailer not in the exact chronological order as it reveals enough to make the audience want to watch more rather than using spoilers. The title and release date is given at the end to keep the audience watching all the way to the end so they know what it is called and when it is being released, as if it was at the start they might not watch it all. Plan B’s name is mentioned which can attract the audience as he is a singer/songwriter and rapper, it may be quite odd or new to find out he is involved with this film. The music also suggests the genre, as it changes through the trailer it shows how calm it is and shows history and toward the end becomes upbeat and engages the audience along with showing it is a urban genre and the plot involves people that are shown in the trailer being involved with violence.

Who is the target audience?
target audience is 18 – 35, as it has explicit material therefore it is rated 18 but may interest younger audience more and may appeal to slightly older adults. Younger audience will be able to understand, or relate to the events in the film whereas older adults may just be interested or want to know what happens in it because of curiosity. This would appeal to struggles as they can relate and reformers and mainly at D/E and with a secondary audience of C2 and C1 who may be intrigued by the looks of the film.

Does it have a unique selling point or use particular techniques to appeal to the audience?
The film makes you think very deeply about the stereotype and uses quotes to make the audience ponder upon, for instance, every action has a reaction and that ‘you cannot escape the choices that you make’, the film may reinforce the stereotype but it has more to the story, more to the narrative and you have to watch it to understand the message.

Consider the way the scenes are edited together – does the trailer give away any clues about the narrative?
It shows that many people are involved in the film, many stories that may link together somehow which can seem slightly confusing but the trailer shows it so well that the audience will want to know more. It isn't cut it order therefore watching the trailer won’t tell you much about the film at all. Fast pace editing is used at some parts which helps the audience watch through the trailer as it doesn't drag on. The trailer shows the genre, the setting and characters along with girls, drugs, weapons which can connote violence and disputes between people or gangs. It also shows an emotional part to it when the man is crying so the story itself is very developed and layered which can make people watch it.

Are the main stars visible in the trailer?
The Trailer provides some of the main characters. The main two characters they provide are Kirby and Chris. This is because they have had a long past relationship which has led them to a point which they meet again. However the audience will try and understand their relationship but they would not get the true story behind the relationship until they watch the film. They trailer also provides brief showing of main characters however, you don’t not come to a clearly understand that they are the main characters, but you do understand they have a dominated role in the estate that they live in. the main characters in the film that have been in previous successful films will be provided in the trailer as it would build viewers for the film. As the audience would believe if they were in a previous film that they enjoyed they will enjoy this one. But however if they believe they actor has been in films they did not enjoy then they would lose many viewers.

Is there information about the director of the film?
The trailer provides information on the director as the director (Plan B) name is provided. Also the cross promotion of plan b music in the background lets the viewer’s know it is the directors music. Also Plan B the director is in the trailer as they provide parts of his music video during the trailer.  This was done to promote his music career as well as his directing career. Also this was done as if the audience knew about Plan B before and listened to his music they would then watch his film, as his target audience is the same age as his fan base. This would then enable him to attract more viewers to his film.

How has the genre of the film been represented through characters, setting, lighting, colour, music, camera shots/movement/angles and editing?
The genre of Ill Manors is crime urban teen drama. This is represented through characters as the way they would talk would be the same as a street council kid would talk. This would be in the form on slang. Also the characters are violent and have weapons and drug on them which is a stereotype view of seeing the characters. The setting of the film is in a council estate and the streets which would represent the genre, as the target audience would live in the same kind of environment to the characters. The setting is mostly at night as it would create tension and connote to the audience at when the crime takes place. The lighting of the film is the dark shots would represent the emotion of the characters and the film which was mostly angry, sad and fear. The colour of the costumes used by the characters were dark this is a stereotype view of teenagers

Ill Manors

PLAN

REVIEW

Ill manors, directed by the rapper and songwriter Plan B (Ben Drew). The movie is a really interesting movie which gave me a sense of reality and the truth behind some peoples lives. The film itself revolves around sex, drugs, violence and weapons. The movie was made to reflect what Ben Drew has seen in his life and how drugs have affected certain people. The movie itself was a dramatic, intriguing and versatile movie.
It was horrific seeing the destruction of the characters as well as the way they were treated. This movie made me realise that a child's life is dependant on their owner meaning their parent, and if they are abandoned then it is unlikely they will learn the norms and values of society and grow up to be something they never thought they would. However the movie also shows how parents struggle and how they have no choice but to abandon their child. This movie made me realise that the ‘road’ life will get you fame but will not take you anywhere in life until you take the right decision to life which is to change their behaviour . The main character in this film was Riz Ahmed whom is a Wembly rapper. This is really ironic as the whole movie is told by rap, and the main character is a rapper. In addition, he from west London which makes it typical as most of west Londons based on the life shown in the movie.
I believe Plan B – Ben Drew was successful in directing this film as this movie was reviewed by people to be a teaching a lesson which made the audience realise reality and life. I believe that the film is about the life of teenagers/adults who have struggled their whole life due to being abandoned by their parents and then following the steps of the ‘road life’ as they don’t have the parents to be taught discipline and manners to. In my opinion the main characters were Aaron and Chris. Chris in my opinion was the main character as the story built up from his childhood.
The soundtrack fitted in well with the emotion behind each individual story. It brought each character’s thoughts and feelings into music. We don’t hear what they are thinking but the music helps put it forward.  The soundtrack fitted right in the film helping to create dramatic element to the movie.  The soundtrack helps promote Plan B’s music, we see shots were Plan B’s narrating while drugs are being dealt with and some characters are intrigued. It promotes his music as people will probably listen to the songs after watching the movie. The audience who would enjoy this movie would be aged (18-40), personally the movie requires a mature audience, it has some gory scenes.  Personally the audience would begin to see the reality of Britain and more importantly some of the stereotypes created in the movie. It also informs the audience about today’s society and what drives people to do certain things in today’s society. The reason why the movie may have been aimed at men is due to the high visuals of violence and props such as guns, drugs and weapons. It also may have been aimed at men as the entire drug dealers were men making the movie full of male dominants, however, there were characters who weren't as significant as the others who were female and had a part in the play where they were also part of the gangs. The female in the character was presented as a sex show as she was shown in many sexual scenes however were forced to which may emphasise on the position of women when it comes to situations such as drug dealers. The lady portrayed where she was used into sexual labour emphasised on the life of a women when she gets into such habits and how it can ruin her future. Towards the end of the film, the police were significant as in the end who ever didn't decide to take the right decision were hand cuffed teaching the audience a moral.

Also another character from the film is also a rapper, an English rapper. Ben Drew focused his characters to have a similar background which makes it easier for the characters to adapt to their role as it’s their reality. They are both rappers making them more confident and reliable for the movie. The plot for Ill manors is a multi-character story set over the course of seven days, a scenario where everyone is fighting for respect, he film focuses on eight core characters and their circles of violence, as they struggle to survive on the streets. Each story weaves into one another, painting an ultra-realistic gritty picture of the world which is on the brink of self-destruction. Each story is also represented by a different rap song performed by Plan B. The aim of the movie seemed to be aimed at men or children who live in a care home, as the movie started off with a debate on children who live at care homes.

Audience Focus Group

One girl's story.

Full narrative -
A young girl has just got married to her newly wedded husband. a few weeks later the girl found out that she was pregnant but didn't want to keep it so she got an abortion without telling her husband. A year has gone by and she eventually gets round to telling her husband and he gets angry that she had got rid of their baby without informing him about it so they both start arguing and he leaves to take a break.. The girls mother has bipolar and it is a genetic illness so the girl has got it too. the girl looks out the window and sees a little baby imagining it was the baby that could of been hers but no one is really there. Where ever she goes everyone just stares at her then she goes home and starts drinking and smashing things up and in herself she sees some change but makes herself believe that she is normal.  the girl then starts taking these pills.. the girl then starts getting ready goes partying.. she then disappears. suddenly when she returns she has transformed into a complete different person (her appearance) she is walking in the middle of the roads where everyone is just staring at her, at this point of the scene we start to see a change, her mother then comes and helps her by bringing her home and cleans her up, we can see that the mum has noticed what was wrong with her daughter so then she started giving her the same medication for the bipolar to get better, but the girl wouldn't take the tablets and secretly hide them away somewhere, eventually the pill was full and towards the end she was getting worse and worse. the mother had no choice but to call the doctors to get the girl sectioned for mental health issues and get her taken to the hospital for professional help, as they came to the house the girl tries to run away and falls on the road, by then the doctors have caught her. Suddenly she sees her husband on the road and screams and cries out his name for help but he just stands there frozen on the spot as they drive her away.

POST FOCUS GROUP IDEA
After hearing the opinions of our focus group, our idea has been adapted to make our production look more realistic. We decided that we wouldn't be able to do as much in 2 minutes for the beginning of our show, so we decided to a shorter storyline to build suspense. This will be that, we are going to build up suspense between the boy and girl, where the girl will be very frigid to text the boy, as she doesn't have the courage to tell him that she's pregnant, because she knows he will do something crazy. The storyline will build up from there where the boy will get paranoid as she's not replying to her texts, and it will end there.

QUOTES FROM RECORDING
''How will you show the beginning of the episode?
''Will it include any other main characters?''
''Have you sorted out your settings?''
''Have you decided on how the acting is going to be shot''
''How will you make it look effective''

TARGET AUDIENCE
broadcast - on channel 4 (E4) 8:00pm. this would be because it is not suitable for little children (young audience) so they should be put to bed early and shown as a reality TV show so this would be a good time for adults and teenagers from 15+ to watch after coming from school/collage or work.
