Ill Manors Print - Branding

What are the key conventions that help you identify the print text (e.g. title, central image, review quotes etc.)?
The first key convention includes a central image of the producer of the film, Ben Drew. This makes the audience aware that he is influence the decisions made in the film and enhances his star image. The title of 'Ill Manors' on the billboard is the same font for everything the brand promotes, such as DVD packaging and posters, so the audience can easily identify the brand through its consistency. Also, Plan B's name is written next to the central image to show how he's taking charge to make this film and experience in the film industry, as well as the music industry.
What design features help identify the Ill Manors brand?
The title is firm, not that sophisticated to employ how the film is urban and low-budget. The colour scheme is in black and white to promote a serious tone, the black connotes a mysterious and fearful feel whereas the white presents a cold feeling, together both colours reflects how the film is a story about events which may turn out to be sinful.
What examples of synergy can you find with the broadcast platform or other print examples?
It gives clear indication to Ill Manors and Plan B's work

What are the key conventions that help you identify the print text (e.g. title, central image, review quotes etc.)?
The first key convention is the central image of Riz Ahmed, one of the main characters, who heavily drives the plot in the film. Ben Drew may have chosen to put Riz Ahmed on there to portray his ghetto character who comes across as ignorant when following the rules in society. There is also a tag line, which is a direct quotation from the beginning of the film itself, to emphasise a particular message which in this instance is to show how the working class kids are a "product" of the the environment they live in, which translates to the fact that society impacts the lives of teenagers.
What design features help identify the Ill Manors brand?
Half of the title is the same font as the usual brand identity to deliver that consistency and makes it easily identifiable. The title is slightly covered in a cartooned type of puke coming directly out of Riz Ahmed's mouth, This symbolises how the working class are desolate about their lifestyles and ultimately makes them sick that society ignores them. The other half of the title, which states the word "MANORS", is written in yellow to demonstrate a sense of impatience and critsim.
What examples of synergy can you find with the broadcast platform or other print examples?

When making the film he wanted to present how taking away opportunities for the youth will lead them to take part in drugs and violence as that is there only way out. Plan B gained a "clear sense" of what he wanted to promote and this was a clarification as to why the youth are seen as negative and this is down to the fact that society tends to alienate this group. The poster seems to be photographed in the suburban areas of London and Plan B decided to film in East London where he originally grew up to show the experiences he faced when growing up. Also, he wanted to create a low-budget film to help promote the grim reality the youth live up to in the suburban areas of London.

What are the key conventions that help you identify the print text (e.g. title, central image, review quotes etc.)?
One key convention is the sign which indicates that Ill Manors is a 18 and over film. This suggests that the print text is a DVD cover or a poster. The film review quotes help enhance this as these key conventions are usually used with film posters or DVD covers. However what makes this print text a DVD cover is the blue banner at the top which says "blue ray+digital copy". Also the image is stretched out from the front to the back so that it goes all around the DVD cover.
What design features help identify the Ill Manors brand?
As usual the font design helps identify the Ill Manors brand. The main character at the front helps the audience to recognize the film. The gun at the front portrays violence besides crime which fits into Ill Manors brand and helps people to identify it. Also underneath the title "Ill Manors" it states that it is a "Ben Drew Film" indicating the Ill Manors brand. Another thing is the design of the image in the background of the estate buildings hurdling in gives the idea of the Ill Manors theme of estates being intimidating.
What examples of synergy can you find with the broadcast platform or other print examples?
There is synergy between other print platforms such as the DVD cover and the music packaging which show the same title in the way it it shown here.

DVD EXTRAS

1) What does this tell us about Plan B's intentions in making the film?
Plan B's intentions in making the film are associated with portraying the lifestyle the youth lead. He specifically focuses on 'chavs' and hood-rats in general and wants to show the audience the style of life these young adults carry out and a justification for the actions in events such as the London riots. He wanted to present how the youth a misunderstood but didn't want to glamorise violence at the same time.

When making the film he wanted to present how taking away opportunities for the youth will lead them to take part in drugs and violence as that is there only way out. Plan B gained a "clear sense" of what he wanted to promote and this was a clarification as to why the youth are seen as negative and this is down to the fact that society tends to alienate this group (by taking away opportunities). The photographer himself stated how Plan B himself wanted to provide two hours of "entertainment" as long as educating the youth.

Plan B decided to film in East London where he originally grew up to show the experiences he faced when growing up. Also, he wanted to create a low-budget film to help promote the grim reality the youth live up to in the suburban areas of London.

2) What do we learn about the production process for Ill Manors?
During the production process Plan B wanted to present life in a different context by promoting the realism of the suburban areas which are not highly regarded in society. In the film, he used some experienced actors such as Riz Ahmed, however the rest of the cast were not experienced and this helps to uplift the realism of street life. Plan B decided to film in East London in order to help the reader understand the background he came from and the society which helped shape his experiences.

In 2008 Plan B released a short-film beforehand to help him gain experience as a director. The film he released in 2008 was initially a 20-page script and he was told overnight he had to reduce his script to five pages. As a result he made a rap song and because rap is an element of hip-hop this was useful for Plan B to demonstrate the realism of growing up in the ghetto. This experience ultimately helped him to be a better director, especially with the credit crunch which took place in 2009 and so Plan B released the short-film on a low-budget. The film was released on Channel 4 and as a result of the short-film it led Plan B to become inspired to make a film incorporated with music. The soundtrack for 'Ill Manors' is a narrative for the film and Plan B wisely embedded rap music in the film to help make his dreams to become a reality.

When filming 'Ill Manors' the cast and crew ran into the police many times. 'Ill Manors' was filmed at locations which were real (not in a studio) such as crack dens and ultimately the police would show up and would search members of the cast and crew. Also, at one point when filming outside a train station a gang approached Plan B and the cast and crew demanding that Plan B had to find elsewhere to film because the gang owned that particular turf and Plan B decided not to move and another gang which was scarier came by and said it was okay for Plan B to film. Plan B stood his ground as that is what he's grown up to be like.

3) What can you tell about the possible target audience from this short documentary?
The target audience must be initially aimed at those who were involved in the riots and those who feel like an outcast in society (working class especially). The C/D/E demographic in particular and those who are reformers because they can understand a justification for why the youth act a type of way. Although it could be argued that the target audience is the ABC1 demographic to change their view on the youth and understand why they also act negatively and therefore the will have the power to help change the youth.

4) Does the film successfully do what director Ben Drew (Plan B) set out to achieve? Explain your answer with reference to both the film and the making of documentary.
The film is successful is showing why the youth act negatively and this is because they are ignored in society. From the film, Plan B wanted to show the audience what the youth will result in (drugs and violence) if they have no place in a society and society is mainly concerned about politics rather than their individual lives. Also, in the film the soundtrack is significant because it is a narrative and it talks about how community centres are shut down. In society, if the youth are not occupied it's bound for them to result to violence if their opportunities are taken away from them. The film in particular gives the audience an insight to the grim reality teenagers have to live through and the only escape is through either living through it or to completely make a change, change can only happen if somebody like Plan B is educating the youth about the consequences of the lifestyle they choose.

BROADCAST/ONLINE

1) What is SBTV? Research the channel and explain how it became successful.
Identify the target audience for this interview (demographics/psychographics) and say why.

SBTV is a multi-faceted company run by a small team of young people who work on web-based viral content at different music-based events. SB.TV was founded in 2006 by a teenager Jamal Edwards, for the first three years Edwards acted alone to provide amateur footage regarding many British grime artists, such as Dizzee Rascal, Wiley, Chipmunk and Tinchy Stryder. As the channel began to attract more attention, it also began offering lifestyle interviews and event coverage, and a production team of ten people was established as a result. Recently, the company has cited its aim to become a more "diverse youth lifestyle broadcaster", incorporating more genres of music. This has been seen in the inclusion of acoustic artists such as Ed Sheeran and other popular artists such as Jessie J, Nicki Minaj, The Wanted and Pixie Lott. In February 2011, SB.TV launched their own music label Just Jam (an imprint of Sony RCA) and recently announced their first signing as east London MC, Maxsta. In March 2011 it had been suggested that the company are expected to go into business with restaurant chain Nando's. The SB.TV website subsequently crashed as close to a million people searched "Jamal Edwards."T On 10 April 2012, SB.TV released a cypher with grime collective Boy Better Know, to celebrate reaching 100 million views across all videos.

The target audience are mainly teenagers who have an interest in grime music, but the age range is between 14 - 25 years, 70% males and 30% females. Demographics would fall between the C/D/E range as the company focus on mostly underground and undiscovered artists. The psychographics would be mainly fall into the mainstreamers category and people who like to keep up-to--date with new trends and upcoming artists in the music industry.

2) What is the audience appeal for an interview like this? How does the opening of the clip emphasise this appeal?

The opening of the clip shows one of the actors from the 'Ill Manors' movie trying to sneakily get an interview with Plan B. This would appeal to the target audience by portraying people who are trying to be adventurous and sort of breaking the rules. The interview is informal and uses mature language (such as swearing) which would also attract the target audience.

3) How is Plan B (the brand) represented in this text?
Plan B is presented as hard-working as he's aiming to get the best footage together as possible. He states in the interview how he sleeps with his shoes on which enhances his gangster image. In addition, Plan B is seen as laid-back and relaxed as well as serious because he's working non-stop.

Brand resigned from the BBC, while Ross was suspended without pay.

2) Identify the target audience for this interview (demographics/psychographics) and say why.
The target audience would be between the ages of 16 - 40 years, the teenagers are most likely to be attracted to this interview because the show itself interviews famous artists and actors such as Jay-Z and Rihanna. The older generation are likely to watch this interview as a result of wanting answers for the riots. So it could be aimed at mainstreamers who watch the show to keep updated on celebrities as well as reformers who have an understanding of why the youth act out.

3) What is the audience appeal for a programme like the Jonathan Ross show?
The Jonathan Ross show interviews many famous celebrities, such as Rihanna, Jay-Z and Beyonce and this would be likely to attract teenagers who have an interest in urban culture. The show is on a prime-time every Saturday night and this means it will have many viewers. The show has also had many old actors and politicians and this would attract more middle-aged/middle-class people who have an interest in politics and the economy.

4) How is Plan B (the brand) represented in this text?

One girls story

In this series I will be starring the main character Ash who will be playing the role of a girl who has experienced bullying in her life. I have chosen to portray someone who has been in a situation like this before as it is more reasonable and understanding as it would be visibly seen through her emotions and her acting throughout the series. As the series is all based on cyber bullying, there will be other forms of bullying also shown in the series, such as abuse and neglect. My main message to represent to my audience is to learn from the series as there will be a lesson taught throughout the series. Now I will present significant parts of an interview of my main star in the series who will be sharing her thoughts and feelings about this new series Channel 4 is broadcasting a brand new series targeting teenagers and young adults. The series is based on the different tragedies teenagers get into in today’s society and how these tragedies can be triggered. The series is called ‘One Girls Story’ which will start to broadcast at 9pm every Friday and Saturday. The reason towards the target audience I particularly chose is to send out a message to all the teenagers out there who are struggling and being bullied through social media. My main focus is to concentrate on cyber bullying as in today’s society it is still a major issue that needs to be triggered.
Ashmita, how was the whole experience for you overall?
This was a once in a lifetime opportunity and im so lucky to have been able to experience this. Taking this role was the best thing I decided to do, it made me realise how much I love to act and I wouldn’t have been who I am if it wasn’t for the show. The show has helped me build up my self-confidence and changed my mind set on certain topics for the better
what was the hardest part to film for you?
I didn't find filming hard to film as I can act quite serious at certain situations, but when I had to act dead I did keep laughing at times because it was hard staying still and not moving. however not only was I laughing throughout the scene I did breakdown at a point because it felt realistic and it broke my heart at the fact that there are girls in these situations that are actually true in today's society and its just sad that some girls have no one to turn too.
How did you feel on your first shoot?
I was very nervous and terrified as I did not want to make any mistakes and ruin my first shoot, but my fellow cast members were really supportive and helped me build up my confidence in being comfortable to act in front of the camera. I loved it!
What do you think of your on screen character?
My on screen character had a very tough back story, which caused her to take such drastic steps. She was a troubled as a little girl and had a rough childhood and I feel bad for her as the things she had to face all alone in such a serious issue

ILL Manors soundtrack album research

ll Manors is a soundtrack album by the rapper Plan B. It was released on 23rd July 2012.

Record companies: Ill Manors (album) was going to be released on May 7th by Atlantic Records. The release date was put back until July 16th. An album launch party had took place in the underground car park in south east london as it went with the theme of the movie.

Sales: The track Ill Manors first premiered on BBC Radio1 on 27th feb 2012, the music video came out on 4th march 2012. The song Ill Manors came at number 6 on the UK singles chart in April. He released another song '"Deepest Shame" on 9th September 2012, it featured Anoushka Mond who played a character called Michelle in Ill Manors. His sales very pretty good as it was appealing to most audiences as well as the fim promoting his music and his music promoting his film. The general public were able to take note of what plan B was trying to achieve and it made him more successful.

Music reviewers response: Ill Manors had got many positive and good comments from other artists LabrinthKanoTakura Tendayi and John Cooper ClarkeThe album was nominated for the Mercury Prize, which would be the first soundtrack album to be nominated. Music review website Metacritic gave the album a score of 83/100, this was based on 14 professional critics which indicate a 'universal acclaim.'

ILL Manors - Music video

Media Forms:
In the music video 'Ill Manors' establishes the setting and engages the target audience which are teenagers. The music video uses fast pace edits and intimidating scenes were you see young teenagers robbing from people, setting cars on fire and smoking, this representation gives teenagers a negative stereotype making other audiences such as the elderly think teenagers are bad and dangerous. Furthermore Plan B has used meaningful lyrics which relate to the teenage demographic audience, moreover it is more likely for this target audience to listen to this type of music which is called grime/rap genre. The shots used in the music video such as long/medium shots establish the setting of the music video which is a rough estate, the setting of the music video may also consider that Plan B has also used the same setting for his film too called 'Ill Manors' making the audience create an idea of the film.

Media Representations:
Gender, ethnicity and age are represented strongly in this music video, it shows a dominant reading to other age groups about the stereotypes towards young teenagers. The gender most represented in this video are young teenager boys/men they are shown as violent, dominant characters which give a negative stereotype to others making them think all teenage boys and men are dangerous. However there are some females used in the video but not shown as much as the males, they seem to be following the male characters which Plan B has intended to do by purpose, reminding the audience that the males are in control. I think the ethnicity and age shown in this music video are white, black, and mix who are young teenagers/adults (16-24); Plan B has used this target audience as the film is based upon the London riots which involved many young teenagers.

Media Institutions:
Plan B released this music video as a protest video to create awareness as estate people are never heard they are most known for thugs, violent and bad behaved people, this is a stereotype as class demographic A and B would think this as they are upper class, wealthy with a good job to keep their lives/families stable whereas the class demographics D and E are described negatively hence they live in a council estate, unemployed or still at school. Plan B himself grew up in a council estate before he became noticed in the music industry therefore he knows how these young people in council estates feel as they are not heard to the public but discriminated as negative people.

Media Audiences:
I think the demographic D and E group would relate to this music video as unemployed, young teenagers who go to school are portrayed in the video. The video shows us teenagers being violent and established in a council estate area making us think they are in the struggler, reformers group of the psycho-graphical group who are not very successful in life and struggle to be heard. Moreover I think this because this group is mostly targeted in the news and modern lives as there many incidents and crimes happening who seem to be young teenagers who can relate to the music video as it is about them overall wanting to be heard.
